|Anyone lucky enough to share a moment with Julie immediately caught on that there was something very special about her. Julie lived like no else, said things no one else could say and did things no one else could do. In person she was larger than life and on stage she was flawless. Julie’s unbridled creativity and inspiring talent made her a natural magnet for others like her; other art and theatre kids. Julie had the talent and the humility that was perfect for a performer. Her rich and brassy mezzo voice was resounding and distinct, her comic timing was impeccable and her range was strong. You couldn’t miss her. From playing “The Witch” in Into The Woods to such characters as “Lucy” in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Julie commanded the attention from the moment she stepped on stage. Offstage, it was like the show never stopped. Living her life to the fullest was something that came naturally and the scholarship fund is just one way to ensure that she can continue to touch the lives of young people through musical theater.Julie’s legacy is one of inspiring confidence in young people who are struggling to find themselves. Julie would have loved nothing more than to help them to find a place where they could always feel at home: on the stage.
Established in 2005, the Julie Curfman Fund was created in Julie’s memory as a scholarship fund for the Wichita, KS chapter of Music Theatre for Young People. Julie’s fund is dedicated to giving young actors the opportunity to experience the freedom and confidence of performing and being a member of a cast.
With a down economy and many unemployed parents, students are limited by financial hardship and unable to participate in the activities they love. Donating to Julie’s Fund gives those students the opportunity to participate in MTYP programs, which can range in cost from $100 – $190. Costs cover script, sheet music, and costume rentals for that student for programs ranging from one to three weeks.
